We bought our home four years ago at 26 South 100 West under the impression that this was a residential neighborhood. I have spoken with all of my neighbors and they had no idea as well that Hyrum had zoned multiple properties on Main to commercial. Some of the lots had a home on it that was built in 1894—at what point was this zoned commercial? We are on the hunt to find out and so far no one has this information for us. Many of the homes on my block are beautiful homes over 100 years old—mine included. What a tragedy to destroy a beautiful historic part of this city by making multiple properties on this block commercial. The impact on our lives from this development will be substantially negative.
When you drive down Center Street in Logan they have preserved the historic homes. Many of the homes on Main in Hyrum have rich Hyrum History and are over 100 years old. What privacy and quality of life will be left for them now with a Hotel and Market in their backyard? Is this the beginning of Hyrum tearing down these houses as they turn this block commercial?
We paid a whopping $465,000 for a home in this crazy housing market in what we felt was a safe neighborhood. We are being robbed of that now by no longer having "neighbors.” We will have a hotel and market in our backyard with constant strangers in and out! What privacy will be left for our children now being sandwiched between Yeidi’s and Hyrum Market & Hotel? What does this market do for the resale of our homes if we decide we don’t want to live next to two businesses? The Hotel will tower over our homes where strangers can view into our windows and yards.
This Hyrum Market also adds a huge parking lot with blaring lights right outside our bedroom window; cars parking directly up against neighboring fences. More dumpster smell. More traffic noise and headlights. More semi-trucks delivering goods and backing up and beeping. More pavement heat and less trees. Less sunlight for gardens with towering buildings shading them. More traffic on a road that is already not safe!!
In October of 2023 my son and I were crossing the road in front of Elite Hall on Main Street and the car that stopped for us got rear ended while we were in the cross walk; thank goodness we were not hurt! On Tuesday night of this week, March 25th around 6:20 PM, almost the exact thing happened, except the car that had stopped for us gunned it to get out of the way of the truck behind them that wasn't going to stop—again while we were in the crosswalk already!
When taking my neighbors to South Cache I have waited more than five minutes to turn left onto Main in the morning—adding more traffic to this road will be detrimental to the safety of our children and community.
I am begging Hyrum to rezone this property. I pray they will have empathy for what it would be like to have a commercial development in their literal backyard. We had close to 20 residents in opposition to this zoning at the Town Hall Meeting this week, on a Thursday night with short notice; I promise I am not the only one feeling deceived and robbed. People who have lived here longer than I have even been alive had no idea these properties have been zoned as commercial. We pray we can take back our neighborhood by rezoning this property to residential!
