Dear Neighbors,
I've spent the last few days gathering my thoughts. I've finally received a bit more clarity on the subject at hand.
First and foremost I love and dearly care about all of my neighbors. I've been blessed beyond measure by the goodness and kindness of many during my time as a resident of this town.
With the development of the property next to me, many emotions are felt very strongly. And several concerns come to light. About 30 years ago my property and several of my neighbors properties were overlayed as C2 zones, also known as commercial use zones. My husband and I purchased our property 7 years ago with absolutely no knowledge of this. Even going through the documents this morning with my husband, there is no mention of the Zoning overlay. My neighbors that have lived here for decades longer than I had no idea of the C-2 zoning overlay either. This knowlege shouldn't be hidden from the propery owners that this information directly affects. Knowlege of zoning should come with the purchase of a property. Why were we not made aware of this at the time of purchasing our property?
Because of this development, and the plans of UDOT, many big changes with traffic flow will be happening. They are not optional. And it will most definitely affect 2 schools, 2 preschools, the city library, museum, and city square.
These points bring to light a question- rather than flaming a fire of contention, hurt feelings, and angry neighbors, how can this situation next to my property be handled peacefully?
Leagally I have come to understand that this property being developed will very likely continue. Rather than argue away about details or trying to find a person to blame for all the issues that have arose and will arise- I strongly believe that the passion of the neighborhood and friends is best directed to a rezoning of the C-2 zoning for the areas surrounding the property next to me. Not only do I hope to protect the property of my neighbors from being bought out and developed, but to also protect the community that my heart and family loves so deeply.
I was pretty worked up and emotional about the situation earlier. The city and state have the mission for growth and development. People need affordable homes, and places to work. Development is something that cannot be stopped. I understand that. But I also understand that I live in a country that protects the rights of my family. And family is my first priority. A slow paced community has been the desire of my family, and our reason for coming to Hyrum.
From my understanding, a slow paced community is also the desire of many of my neighbors. I feel that needs protected and respected. I can make peace with this development, IF the zoning law is changed for the rest of this side of town. Downtown Hyrum can continue to develop up on 8th East. The petition being signed can be used for this. It would be a middle ground of tolerance on both parties. I hope that it would bring peace to the situation. That is my desire at least.
With the deepest sincerity,
Elyse Jimenez
